WHY DID LIL TECCA TURN DOWN THE XXL FRESHMAN LIST?

Updated: Nov 25, 2020

With the recent announcement of the annual XXL freshman list, many were upset to not see Lil Tecca included. Many were angry at XXL for seemingly overlooking him yet again, until we learned that Lil Tecca had turned down the opportunity himself. Will this decision hurt his career, or will he continue to flourish without the aid of the legendary freshman list?

This is not the first time that an artist has turned down an opportunity to be a XXL freshman. Artists such as Post Malone, Juice Wrld and Tory Lanez have also turned down the list, just to name a few. It’s easy to see why successful artists such as these declined to be a part of the list, as they already had a very successful career and were making mainstream music competing with the likes of Drake and Kendrick Lamar (who was a freshman at one point in time as well). It’s safe to say that Lil Tecca is a popular rapper, but is it right to say that he is a mainstream rapper who is too big for the list?

If Lil Tecca had been a part of the list, he would have not been the biggest rapper among the others. Artists such as Rod Wave and Lil Tjay have had around the same amount of success so to speak, and Polo G is by far the most popular. Lil Tecca did have a song peak at number 4 on the billboard hot 100, but does that mean he has had a more consistent career than someone such as Polo G? Definitely not! Looking at their streaming numbers, it’s quite clear that Polo G comfortably beats Lil Tecca.

2020 has had a fair share of music, but not much from Lil Tecca. He has been working on his album and therefore has not put out as much music. Could this be the reason he hasn’t had great streaming numbers? It’s very possible! He could have used the XXL platform to further promote his upcoming album and boost his career further, but ultimately the choice is his to make, and he chose not to be a XXL Freshman.

We’ll have to wait and see whether this turns into a decision that haunts him, or contributes to his future success.
