As music fans, 2021 didn't have the start that we anticipated. We were told that we'd hear new music from some of the top artists in the game but most of them have been nowhere to be found (yeah I’m talking to you Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and Travis Scott). But as 2021 moves on and May starts to roll around it feels like the music industry is really starting to get back on its feet after the treacherous effect 2020 had on everyone. We are finally seeing festivals like Rolling Loud, Governors Ball, Astroworld Festival, and Lyrical Lemonade’s Summer Smash start to announce lineups for upcoming events (shoutout A$AP Rocky who is seemingly headlining almost every one). Because of all this it feels like artists are finally comfortable with dropping music again which is great news for fans.
Over the past few weeks we have seen the singles/albums that drop every Friday get progressively better. In April we had Young Thug and Young Stoner Life Records album ‘Slime Language 2’, Polo G’s single “RAPSTAR” which dominated the charts, Lil Tjay’s ‘Destined 2 Win’, Lil Yachty’s ‘Michigan Boy Boat’, and Dj Khaled’s ‘KHALED KHALED’. Most of these projects/songs were not great (RAPSTAR was a hit), but it is a good start. Now after waiting all this time we are finally seeing our first big star “get up to bat” as J. Cole has announced that his highly anticipated album ‘The Off-Season’ will be dropping on May 14th. My expectations for the project are not very high as Cole’s lead single which dropped today called “i n t e r l u d e” didn't exactly blow me away, but as a music fan and a someone who really enjoys J. Cole’s old music, I am really excited.
With all of that being said, I hope J. Cole can get the ball rolling this year for other big artists to drop. We of course are all expecting ‘Certified Lover Boy’ from Drake, but it has been too long since we have heard a new album from artists like Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott, A$AP Rocky, Tyler The Creator, Frank Ocean, Kanye West, Rihanna, JID, Joey Bada$$, and so many more. Although I know we wont get any new music let alone an album from probably half of those people, seeing the music industry start to bounce back certainly has music fans happy and hoping.
Let me know what artists you want to see drop in 2021.
